The three coal mines around the company town of Somerset, CO are coming to an end. Two of the three mines, operated by the Oxbow and Mountain Coal companies, have ended operations. The third is working to expand into official roadless territory, but is being challenged in court successfully thus far. One of the mines closed due to a fire, and another closed due to a bankruptcy, which is occurring across the coal mining industry due to lack of major investments to keep them operating as regulations and climate change education increase.
