Shiprock, in northwestern New Mexico, is a spiritual bird known as Tse Bi dahi to the Navajo nation and people, responsible for relocating them to safety. To rock climbers it was (no longer permitted) a goal to be conquered. To photographers it is a geologic location with vast potential. To an environmentalist it is also a geographic symbol of the locale where two of America's most polluting coal mines and power plants, the Four Corners and San Juan power plants, generate electricity. It is a beautiful tragedy of the modern population that must live with the local air and water pollution and global climate change.
